Durham, NC   4/25/07 (in swamp/marsh area)

Net-winged Beetle (Plateros genus), Durham, NC, 4/27/07.  This beetle showed up about a city block from the swamp. Seven-spotted Ladybug Beetle (Coccinella septempunctata), Durham, 4/27/07. Flower Fly (Toxomerus marginatus), Durham, NC, 4/27/07.  The yellow-orange/red variation in color is unusual. White-lined Burrower Bug, Durham, NC, 4/27/07 Dark Fishing Spider, Durham, NC, 4/27/07.  The pale object may be an egg sac.

 

Possibly a Chrysomelid beetle, Durham, NC, 4/25/07.  About 5 mm long, seen on flowering plant on edge of marsh.

Durham, NC  4/2,3/07

Bullfrog, Durham, NC, 4/2/07.  Seen at another creek in my neighborhood.  It uttered a squeaky "Yap!" as it jumped in the water. Mating Tipulid Crane flies, Durham, NC  4/2/07.  You can see the pin-cushion pin-like halteres on both: these are vestigial wings believed by some scientists to perform a balancing function.
